Did a dog fall into a canal and almost drown before a dolphin rescued it, as pictured in viral news? No, that's not true.




Update: An earlier version of this story claimed, "Poor Dog Falls Into Canal And Fights For Life Until Group Of Dolphins Save Him In Miraculous Effort". The story was later found to be false and misreported.

A story about a group of dolphins saving a dog that was drowning went viral with several news sites reporting it. However, it has been found that the story is anything but true. It was reported as fake news. Initially, it was reportad that the dog, "Turbo escaped from the yard of his owner, Cindy Burnett, on Florida's Marco Island, and ended up paddling in a nearby canel that led to the ocean. When Cindy came home and discovered he wasn’t there, she drove around town through the night trying to find him on the street. Turbo had been reported to be missing for 15 hours when neighbors were alerted to his plight by a pod of dolphins, which were swimming with Turbo and splashing loudly. Burnett called the dolphin-aided rescue 'a miracle'."


It was also added that firefighters were able to lift the puppy over the sandbar and return him back to his owners, relatively unharmed. However, the true story is that such an incident never really happened. The image of the brown dog riding on the back of a dolphin is apparently from a short film titled Zeus and Roxanne, which was the work of a Dutch filmmaker, reported fact-checking site lead stories. The viral image was a screengrab from the short film that runs just six minutes. You can watch it here below.

Irrespective of the reported incident, dolphins are known to be very caring creatures. Lori Marino, one of the world's leading experts on dolphins, explained that dolphins display a startling amount of empathy towards other species. “They’re a very social, very caring species," she explained. “They care for each other in ways that no other species does. So I think when they know that somebody else is in trouble, it’s part of their nature to help." She added that if an animal was beginning to sink, their natural response would be to lift it up to the surface. "That’s what they do when one of their own kind or a dolphin from another species is injured," Marino explained. "And mothers do it for their calves to make sure they come up to the surface in enough time to breathe. So they’re just extending their natural caregiving behavior to another species."

The world's shortest woman met the world's tallest man, who is four times her height, in Egypt on Friday (Jan 26).

Ms Jyoti Amge, who is from India and stands at a wee 0.63m tall, holds the Guinness World Record for the shortest living woman who is mobile.

The 25-year-old met the world's tallest living man, Turkey's Sultan Kosen, in Egypt's Giza city on the west bank of the Nile.

Mr Kosen, 36, is 2.51m tall.

Ms Jyoti, who lives in Nagpur, India, has a condition called achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism.

The actress has starred in shows like American Horror Story: Freak Show, documentary films and Hindi film Pan Supari.

Mr Sultan was the first man over eight feet (2.43m) to be measured by Guinness World Records in more than 20 years.


Mr Kosen, 36, is 2.51m tall.

Ms Jyoti, who lives in Nagpur, India, has a condition called achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism.

Mr Sultan was the first man over eight feet (2.43m) to be measured by Guinness World Records in more than 20 years.

He first became the world's tallest living man in 2009, when he was 2.47m tall. He has since grown taller.



His height is caused by a condition known as pituitary gigantism, where the brain produces abnormally large amounts of growth hormone from the pituitary gland.




Mr Sultan has four siblings and the rest of his family are of average heights. He was married in 2013.

Mr Sultan met Ms Jyoti for a photo shoot in front of the Giza pyramids on Friday.

They were visiting the country to promote tourism to Egypt.
